Description

People have passions. But sometimes—passions have people. Anyone who lives in or visits Long Beach feels the vibe. There's a vacation atmosphere, bikers, joggers, surfboard toters are present year round. It's a user-friendly City By The Sea. But there's an area in our town that takes that feeling down. Vulgar signage blows in the wind—and in our faces. I'm sure many of you a familiar with the flags of which I speak. There has been some ink about it in our local papers describing the controversy and the police response. I see it as not only a political story but a story about passions. I came upon the flying flags recently while stopped at a nearby traffic light. As I sat there I realized: vulgar as they were, in an important sense, I was glad to see them. I was also glad to find people whose passions are not flying on flags, but shining in their faces. My point of view: https://leebythesea.me/2021/12/15/passions-private-and-profane/ Be well, Leebythesea
