STAMFORD, CT — The Stamford Police Department's Behavioral Health Unit (BHU) will be hosting several informative events over the coming days, the department said in a Facebook post earlier this week. On Dec. 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the BHU will be at the Real Tabernacle Church of God at 795 Atlantic St., and St Mary's at 7 p.m. later that day. The SPD said on Facebook that the purpose of the events is to bring awareness to mental health and mental illness, and how it affects families in the community. The BHU was established in May of this year to address and help people suffering from mental illness. Former Mayor David Martin announced a variety of mental health initiatives for the SPD in May. The SPD BHU team consists of Licensed Clinical Social Worker Carolina Grijalba-Rodriguez, Sgt. Adriana Molina, and Officer Robert Daly. The unit is bilingual in Spanish. "What makes us successful is our broad relationships of contacts, resources and service providers," the SPD said in a Facebook post. "Then we are able to pass the contacts and resources to the community and make them aware of what's out there." The SPD has partnered with Recovery Network of Programs, a nonprofit organization based in Bridgeport, in the BHU initiative. For more information or to request the BHU to attend an event in Stamford, call 203-977-4412.
