KIRKLAND, WA — Kirkland families seeking a jolt in the new year can now register for the city's inaugural "January Jump Polar Plunge." In an announcement this week, officials said the new event would take the place of an informal polar plunge event that has taken place in previous years after the organizer decided not to go through with the permit process. The city's Parks and Community Services division will host the January Jump on Jan. 22 at Houghton Beach, with proceeds benefitting local scholarships. On top of the chilly dip in Lake Washington, the event promises trivia, prizes and games, including a contest for the best costume. Food trucks will be on-site serving up warm drinks and donuts, with free clam chowder courtesy of Ivar's. Residents can register in advance online for $20 or pay $25 on event day. Plunge participants will also get a free t-shirt to commemorate their bravery. A virtual option is also available, for those who would prefer to participate from the warmth of their home, with tickets priced at $10. More information is available on the Kirkland Parks website.
