Memorial Held For Marine Killed While Helping A Stranded Motorist

CAMP PENDLETON, CA —A memorial service was held on Monday at Camp Pendleton for USMC Lance Cpl. Alberto Lucio, 20, who was struck by a vehicle and killed on Dec. 6 while aiding a motorist in a disabled SUV on Interstate 5 near the military base. Lucio, a native of Smithville, Tennessee, was a military policeman with the USMC Security and Emergency Services Battalion. Monday's memorial took place at Camp Pendleton's Marine Memorial Chapel. In the aftermath of his death, and again at the memorial, Lucio was lauded for his final act, which was providing critical aid to people in need. "Lance Corporal Lucio gave his life in the service of others. His actions epitomized servant leadership and personified the very best in our emergency-services personnel," Col. John Black, commanding officer of the Security and Emergency Services Battalion, said last week. The driver of the disabled SUV, which Lucio had aided, and a woman who had been riding in the vehicle were hospitalized with serious injuries after the incident, according to CHP. According to WSMV in Nashville, Lucio also was honored last week at his alma mater, DeKalb High School. The school held a moment of silence for Lucio, and his photo will be added to the school's Honor Wall. His name already is listed on the school's Military Alumni Wall, the station reported.
