Teen With Hearing Disability Shines With 'Strength, Perseverance'

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A seventh-grader at the Southampton Intermediate School has been recognized for her innate positivity. Marleny Molina is this month's Southampton Intermediate School "student spotlight." Marleny, who has a hearing disability, recently learned American Sign Language and was thrilled to join the school's soccer team, "where she thrived," district officials said. "She scored two goals during her first game of the season and an assist in her second game." "When seventh grader Marleny Molina started her first day at Southampton Intermediate School in September, 2019, no one knew how much positivity she would bring to the building. From Day 1, administrators, teachers and fellow students said Molina brightened the halls with her infectious smile and attitude," the district said. Despite her challenges, Marleny continued to raise the bar, the district said. "She is an example of pure strength and perseverance," said school counselor Jorgine Buccio-Granados. "She is a motivated, determined and competitive individual who does not let adversity interfere with her participating in any activities in or out of the classroom." Superintendent Dr. Nicholas Dyno agreed. "She has strength and passion for all that she does," he said. In addition to playing soccer, Molina plays softball and enjoys riding her bike, making others laugh and spending time with her family, the district said. "We look forward to her continued journey in Southampton Schools," said Buccio-Granados.
