SARASOTA, FL — Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie cracked the top five list for 2021 internet search terms, according to Google Trends' "Year in Search 2021" report for the United States. That's not surprising considering the media frenzy surrounding their missing person cases and deaths this fall. Petito came in at No. 3 on the list, while Laundrie was No. 5. The top five was rounded out by the NBA at No. 1, DMX at No. 2 and Kyle Rittenhouse at No. 4. The couple made other Google Trends lists for the year, separately, as well. Petito was No. 2 and Laundrie No. 3 in 2021 in searches about deaths. Meanwhile, the search terms "Brian Laundrie update" and "Gabby Petito update" came in at No. 2 and 3, respectively, on the updates search list. The couple made headlines starting in mid-September after Petito was reported missing by her family in New York. They last heard from her at the end of August, when Petito and Laundrie were traveling the country, visiting national parks out west, in her van. Her body was found near a Wyoming national park and a coroner determined she was killed by strangulation. Laundrie was named a person of interest in her death. His skeletal remains, including a portion of his skull, were found Oct. 20 in the Carlton Reserve and the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in Sarasota County, along with several of his belongings, after more than a month of searching for him. The FBI used dental records to match the remains to Laundrie.No cause of death could be determined after an Oct. 22 autopsy, and Laundrie's bones were sent to a forensic anthropologist for further examination.The District 12 Medical Examiner's Office determined that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
