SALEM, MA — The campaign to "Save The Seahorse" has begun in Salem.
Only this campaign is not about protecting the tiny marine life in the ocean, but the sculpture that has been part of the Salem Harbor Connector Path for the past year.
The sculpture was set to be in the location for a year and then go back to the artist. However, Salem officials are have reached an agreement with Jose Criollo to purchase it at a discounted price and have it remain a piece of public art in the city.
Now, the city is looking to raise the remaining $6,000 of the $12,000 necessary to purchase and stage the Seahorse in a permanent location. The city has set up a fundraising page via PatronCity that was at $1,270 as of Monday afternoon.
All those who pledge $50 or more will receive a professional photo of the Seahorse autographed by the artist. Individual or group gifts of $500 or more will have their names engraved on a plaque that will be placed with the sculpture.
"Help us keep this breathtaking sculpture in Salem and make it a permanent part of the city's growing collection of public art," officials said. "Help give the gift of art to your community this holiday season, please donate today."
The city is looking to hit the $6,000 mark by the end of December.
Should the goal not be met, the city said the money raised will go directly to the artist and the city will look for other ways to raise the remaining difference.
