NEW YORK CITY — The fact out-of-towners flock to New York City to ring in the New Year exactly isn't news to anyone, but the fact a trip to watch the ball drop at midnight in Times Square shouldn't come to anyone's surprise, either. New York sits atop the list for New Year's Eve destinations, edging out Las Vegas, according to a recently released study by WalletHub. While New York City achieved the top score in a survey of 100 U.S. cities, it ranked almost at the bottom when it comes to the price it will cost visitors. New York City achieved a score of 67.50, which finished ahead of Las Vegas (67.39), Orlando, Fla. (66.50), Atlanta (66.03) and Miami (65.47) to round out the top 5 on WalletHub's list of most desirable New Year's Eve locales. The study found that out of 100 destinations, New York tied for first in the number of night spot options and ranked 51st in terms of the average price of a New Year's Eve party ticket. The overall rankings took several factors int consideration, including entertainment and food options, New Year's Eve events per capita, restaurants per capita, party supply stores, safety and accessibility and costs. Organizers for this year's Times Square celebration said that they will require attendees to provide proof of vaccination and a valid government-issued ID. Last year, visitors were relegated to socially distanced pods due to on-going health and safety concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. New York City managed to hold down the top spot the fact that it ranked next to last in terms of cost. Only Irvine, Calif., ranked lower (or more expensive) than New York in the WalletHub rankings. New York ranked 10th in safety and accessibility – a category that was topped by Madison, Wisconsin, the study found.
