Here are the top stories in Burlington today: On Monday night, the Burlington City Council advanced a charter change to decriminalize sex work in the Queen City. If endorsed by the mayor, it would go before voters on Town Meeting Day. Councilors say there are several benefits to removing language about sex work from the charter, one being that people can report crimes against them without incriminating themselves. (WCAX)The City of Burlington is now using its wastewater surveillance system to regularly screen for COVID mutations associated with the Omicron variant at all three municipal wastewater samples. In the first samples taken on Dec. 5 and 6 at each wastewater plant, mutations associated with Omicron were not detected —a strong indication that the Omicron variant had not spread to Burlington as of those dates. The latest tests indicate that Delta continues to be the dominant strain of the COVID-19 virus locally. (Vermont Biz)Vermont's largest city could see temperatures that rival a 39-year-old record this week. A high of 53 degrees is forecast for Thursday, which would tie a record warmth for Dec. 16, set in 1982. The average high this time of year is approximately 31 degrees in Burlington.
