Man Killed In UES Subway Tunnel, Another Hurt 1 Hour Later

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A person was killed in an Upper East Side subway tunnel Monday afternoon and another was hit by a train shortly after, in two apparently unrelated accidents, according to police. The fatal incident happened around 12:54 p.m., when a 44-year-old man came into contact with the electrified third rail while in the tunnel between the 68th Street-Hunter College and 86th Street stations, police said. The conductor of a northbound 6 train saw the man's body in the tunnel and contacted authorities. The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, an NYPD spokesperson said. Police could not say why the man was on the tracks, but said no criminality was suspected. Just over an hour later, at 2:13 p.m., a person was struck by a train at the 86th Street-Lexington Avenue stop, police said. There were no immediate details about that person's condition. The accident caused 6 trains to run express between 42nd and 125th streets, the MTA said at 2:22 p.m. Some 5 trains were running along the 2 line, while 4 trains were delayed as they shared the same track with rerouted trains. 6 trains are delayed in both directions while emergency teams respond to someone who was struck by a train at 86 St.— NYCT Subway.
