City of Portland, Maine MAINTENANCE WORKER III-TRAFFIC Public Works Department – Search Extended – Up to $2,500 Sign on Bonus Available - Schedule is first shift Monday thru Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. with a paid lunch. Working knowledge of the functions and operating methods of a wide variety of heavy and complex construction equipment (bucket trucks, paint machines, sign trucks) used for various Traffic-related jobs as well as for winter operations; knowledge of hazards and of applicable safety rules and regulations regarding this equipment; ability to construct a safe and efficient work zone; works safely, effectively and courteously in or around an active and sometimes busy roadway; responds to work orders and requests via electronic devices and performs the desired tasks; operates specialty tools and assists Traffic Signal Technicians on highly skilled functions such as programming variable message boards and radar speed units; performs winter operations as required; assists the Traffic Sign Computer Operator in designing and preparing traffic regulatory signs by computer or manually in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices to include designing and producing signs and banners for the City of Portland, operating and maintaining all sign making equipment, preparing regulatory signs by computer and applying them to metal sign plates or other necessary applications, preparing traffic sign work orders and preparing invoices for signs that have been requested; good visual acuity for driving and the physical strength, agility and stamina to withstand exposure to adverse climatic conditions; ability to distinguish colors and patterns; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the general public; ability to work various shifts as required. Desired Experience: Experience using heavy equipment such as dump trucks, loaders and bucket trucks; knowledge of and ability to operate winter equipment; knowledge of pavement marking layout training, work zone safety training, crosswalk paint machine training, sign installation training or any equivalent combination of experience and training; proven computer experience in the operation of graphics software and ability to work with standard Microsoft office programs. Requirements: Must be high school graduate; must have valid Maine Class B license (may be willing to hire with a Class C license as Maintenance Worker II and will send to school to get Class B license); must have and maintain a good driving record; must pass federally-mandated drug test if hold Class B license; must pass pre-employment physical and lift assessment.
