Description

*Tour Assistant Extraordinaire! (aka ‘my right hand’ and ‘grunt’)* Job description: To work directly with the Tour Director (me!) non-stop for 4 weeks setting up a traveling sales show of fine art prints and posters for the university community in the US. Involves setting up a ‘sales show’ at different campuses in varying conditions, from indoor rooms to outdoor tents. Travel is cross-country in a large truck/van starting in NYC and going to South Carolina and back. Mass sales of a wholesale product, thus a very intense, often high-stress job with long hours. Duties will include (but not be limited to): Loading/unloading. This is HEAVY work. Very tiring. I have yet to find someone (man or woman) who has not been surprised and exhausted by the volume and weight of the display books and stock boxes. If you have a bad back, don’t apply. If you don’t like to work HARD, don’t apply. If you like physical work this is the job for you! Setup/Breakdown: This goes alongside loading/unloading in that everything we take in and out of the van must be set up and broken down to create the sales environment. It can take anywhere from 1-2 hours in the morning and the same in the evening. Stocking/stocktaking. Besides the above, this is your main role. As the posters sell, the display books need to be constantly monitored and refilled. On a slow week, this might not seem so difficult, but if we are at a high volume school, you will find yourself running around all day long refilling sleeves and tracking inventory. This is extremely important, as we can’t sell what isn’t out on offer! I depend upon you to be very on-the-ball in this area, as I am stuck at the counter the whole day and can’t leave often, if at all. Customer Service: This is simple, well minus those annoying problem customers. Just assisting customers when they have questions or need help handling posters, etc. Maintenance: This is general upkeep of the show. You will be surprised by the amount of damage that is incurred by careless customers. The show needs to be kept as safe, tidy and attractive as possible at all times. (Of course.) Prints pushed back into sleeves, damages collected, displays repaired, etc. Miscellaneous: As I am responsible for the ‘sales show’, I don’t often leave the immediate area. This means I will need you to be ‘on-call’ for me to do whatever needs doing! This ranges from making phone calls to buying supplies to grabbing us lunch. If you don’t like taking orders or being at my beck and call, don’t apply! Requirements: -Physically able to lift and be on feet for hours on end. -Flexible attitude. -Driver’s license. (if foreign, just get an international license) -Ability to handle ‘road life’ (hotels, long hours in truck, bad radio, eating on the road, etc.) -Ability to work under pressure and in extreme conditions. -Creativity. -Common sense. -Not afraid to sweat and get dirty. -Able to deal with monotonous work at times. -Able to deal with me all the time. -Sense of humour. Available from January 4th to early February. -Must be able to do mornings! Hazards: -Young sorority girls. -Americans in general. -Paper cuts. -Reactions to cardboard. -Christian conservatives. -Dodgy Chinese food. -Me when highly stressed. Salary, benefits, etc: -$700 cash per week. -Bonus dependent upon sales. (Can give you an estimate.) -Flights, hotels and food covered for duration of the tour. -See America by road!
