PEABODY, MA — Welcome to a bright and crisp winter Sunday on the North Shore. With the Patriots on the bye this week hoping a bunch of you got a chance to hit a few small businesses for some holiday shopping. With two weeks left until Christmas, it's a busy time for almost everybody. But it's been an especially busy month for Essex Tech sophomore Mara Stein, who is part of the Boston Children's Chorus performing with Tony-winning Broadway star Idina Menzel in "WILD: A Musical Becoming" at Harvard University's American Repertory Theater. The Peabody 15-year-old is wrapping up one set of performances Sunday and will be back at it for another week from Dec. 26 to Jan. 2. Peabody Teen Takes Stage With Broadway Stars In 'WILD' Production Mara Stein is used to singing in front of huge crowds in massive stadiums having performed the national anthem at a New England Revolution contest at Gillette Stadium and a Washington Nationals game at Nationals Park. This month, the Peabody teen and Essex Tech sophomore is getting the chance to sing alongside one of Broadway's most celebrated stars as she shares the stage with Tony-winning performer Idina Menzel. "When I found out I would be performing with Idina Menzel and other Broadway performers I was thrilled and couldn't wait to start rehearsals." - Peabody 15-year-old Mara Stein. Peabody Football Players Disciplined For Locker Room Video Peabody school officials said an investigation into high school football player locker room behavior on a video that circulated among students on social media determined that while the behavior violated student and athletic code, it did not meet the legal definition of hazing or bullying. Salem Police Chief Warns Of Rise In Drug Overdose Deaths Salem Police Chief Lucas Miller said a 45 percent rise in drug overdose deaths could be attributed to a growing presence of fentanyl in drugs purchased on the streets. Peabody Resident Captures Porch Pirate In Action Samantha Faulkner is hoping that sharing her story of nearly $400 in packages being swiped from her front steps will lead to the arrest of those responsible for the case of Peabody porch piracy. (Samantha Faulkner) North Shore Residents Demand Changes On Deadly Route 114 After years of pleas for safety improvements on Route 114 that have only led to more crashes and deaths, victim's families, residents and elected officials expressed hope that Thursday night's emotional Peabody Municipal Safety Committee meeting will be what finally jumpstarts fixing what they call a deadly road with a "suicide" middle turning lane. "I lost my son because of the lack of safety on this road," said Rachel Dellacroce, whose 18-year old son, Nicholas, was struck and killed on his motorcycle by a driver trying to cross all five lanes of Route 114 five months ago. "If there were a median strip instead of the hazardous suicide (middle turning) lane, I'd still have two children. "And I'm going to keep saying that probably until the day I'm gone." Danvers Taxes To Rise $269 For Average Single-Family Home The average Danvers single-family homeowner's annual tax bill will rise about $269 in 2022 based on a tax levy distribution approved at Tuesday night's Select Board meeting. Swampscott Select Board Seeks 'Free Cash' Tax Levy Middle Ground The Swampscott Select Board voted unanimously to amend its recommended use of "free cash" to help offset property tax increases in the town for Fiscal Year 2022 as it looks long term toward saving more of those surpluses for capital projects.
