Morning, people of Roanoke! It's me again, Nicole Fallon-Peek, your host of the Roanoke Daily. First, today's weather: Partly sunny and mild. High: 59 Low: 33. Here are the top stories today in Roanoke: A newly formed coalition is turning its attention to mining in the Commonwealth, fearing what they say are the potential effects on drinking water. During a virtual press conference yesterday, members of the Press Pause VA Coalition said they're focused on slowing the permitting process for copper, lead, and zinc mining. Press Pause VA hopes their efforts bring attention to the potential effects of mining those metals, much like similar efforts made by the General Assembly to study the effect of gold mining. (WDBJ7) Check out the monthly Dog Bowl Market at Black Dog Salvage on Dec. 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All items for sale from guest vendors will be hand-made, upcycled, or vintage. Your favorite vendors old and new will be there, plus over 100 local artisans and vendors located inside The Marketplace at Black Dog Salvage. (visitroanokeva.com) The Roanoke Corps said it's significantly behind on its annual red kettle donations. The goal for 2021 is $150,000 and not hitting that goal will impact its programs in 2022. The Salvation Army Roanoke Corps is also in need of volunteer bell ringers. Right now it is only able to man just over 25% of the total locations available to the organization. (WDBJ7) Two musicians in Roanoke are refurbishing old instruments to give children in need the gift of music. Bill Hudson and Al Coffey have picked up dozens of donated musical instruments to give to children who can't afford one of their own. If you want to donate an instrument, depending on your location, Coffey or Hudson can arrange a time to pick up the instrument from your home.
