Press release from the Baltimore County Fire Department: December 13, 2021 The Baltimore County Fire Department tomorrow will award its third-highest honor, the Bronze Star, to a volunteer fire captain and a Baltimore County Police officer. The BCoFD Commendations Ceremony will be held Tuesday, December 14, 7 p.m., at Loch Raven High School, 1212 Cowpens Ave., 21286. The Bronze Star rewards extraordinary intelligence and bravery entailing serious risk. Rodney T. Hyde, a captain with the Lutherville VFC and a member of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, was on his way home from his shift in Anne Arundel County on June 3, 2020 when he encountered a fiery crash on I-695 near I-95 involving a tractor trailer and a smaller vehicle. Captain Hyde, who arrived before BCoFD crews, rescued one victim from the smaller vehicle and assisted a second. BCoPD Sgt. Patrick Burns of the Woodlawn precinct receives the Bronze Star for rescuing two people from an apartment fire in the 7100 block of Rudisill Court, 21244, on November 15, 2020. "The Fire Department does not treat awards lightly," said Fire Chief Joanne Rund. "Public safety work is dangerous, and our job sometimes requires us put ourselves in harm's way to help others. Our Commendations Board looks for truly extraordinary performance in deciding to give an award." The Commendations Board comprises career, volunteer and retired Fire Service members who evaluate nominations for awards based on specific criteria. Other awards that will be presented tomorrow: Two career firefighters will receive the Departmental Commendation, which involves extraordinary bravery entailing moderate risk, for their work on a July 7, 2020 dwelling fire in the 3400 block of Hopkins Avenue, 21227. Two career firefighters will receive the Departmental Commendation for their work on an October 18, 2020 dwelling fire with rescue in the 600 block of Middlesex Road, 21221. Three members will receive the Distinguished Service Award in recognition of specific contributions over the course of their careers. Members of the Brooklandville Fire Station will be honored for their work developing protocols for safe operations during the pandemic. Departmental Unit Citations will be awarded to engine, truck, medic and other crews for their work on nine incidents. These include an over land rescue, an electrocution, an open water rescue and the August 2020 house explosion in Baltimore City.
