HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Individuals interested in securing a position on Howard County Library System's board of trustees can apply for a seat representing Districts 1 and 5. HCLS' board establishes policies, approves budgets and ensures that HCLS fulfills its mission of delivering high-quality public education for all ages.
Trustees serve in a voluntary capacity, are appointed to 5-year terms and may be reappointed for a consecutive term. Selection criteria include a candidate's:
Understanding of, and appreciation for, Howard County Library System's unique role as an educational institution that delivers high-quality public education for all. Passion and commitment to maintaining and expanding HCLS' local, regional, state and national reputation for innovation and achievement. Commitment to equitable education, policies, access and accurate, unbiased information that aids in creating an equitable and just society for all people. Previous board, organizational or lived experience; strategic vision; experience in business, financial, equity and personnel practices; and a history of community commitment and involvement. While trustees should be available for a 7 p.m. meeting scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month, the HCLS board typically meets five times per year.
Following an interview process, the HCLS board forwards its recommendations to the county executive, who appoints trustees subject to County Council approval.
