Secret Revealed About New Frank Sinatra Statue In Hoboken

HOBOKEN, NJ — The city of Hoboken unveiled a bronze statue of Frank Sinatra on the Hudson River waterfront on Sunday, what would have been the legendary crooner's 106th birthday. Sinatra's daughter, Tina Sinatra, and other dignitaries attended the event. A secret about the sculpture was revealed on Sunday: Those who look closely will see Sinatra wearing a pinkie ring. In fact, Sinatra's daughter Tina sent one of her father's rings to sculptor Carolyn Palmer to incorporate into the sculpture. Sinatra, born in 1915, grew up in a house at 415 Monroe St. on the west side of Hoboken. "When visitors come to take photos or tip their hats," said Mayor Ravi Bhalla at the ceremony on Sunday, "I hope this statue inspires them to follow their passion and to work hard until they turn their dreams into reality, just like he did." Bhalla noted, "This will not only memorialize him, but also the impact he has had on the city of Hoboken, its residents, and American society." If You Want To See For Yourself For those who want to see the statue, it's a seven-block walk north along the waterfront from the Hoboken train station. (Map here.) The train station and statue are also within walking distance of another tourist attraction, Carlo's Bakery the setting of the "Cake Boss" TV show. The statue was placed on the waterfront, the city said, so that New York City skyline is in the background, reminding onlookers of the crooner's song "New York, New York." The city commissioned the bronze sculpture at no expense to the taxpayers, using private donations totaling $100,000. Other homages and images of the singer abound in mile-square Hoboken. Sinatra Drive and Sinatra Park are named for him, and there's a plaque where he grew up on Monroe Street. (The actual building burned down years ago). Sinatra passed away on May 14, 1998.
