HOBOKEN, NJ — The Hoboken Board of Education will hold its second presentation about the proposed new $241 million Hoboken High School building on Tuesday, at its regular monthly board meeting. They are also planning four other public hearings. Tuesday's meeting will be held in person at the Demarest School at Fourth and Garden streets (where Hoboken Middle School is housed). The public can comment at the meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. The agenda was posted here Monday morning. The proposed new high school building would be erected at the present site of the school athletic field at Tenth and Jefferson streets. See below for a list of five meetings that will be held. The public will ultimately vote for or against funding the plan in a referendum on Jan. 25. Dates Of The Five Meetings Five public meetings are scheduled to be held on these dates: Board of Education meeting in Demarest School Auditorium (near Church Square Park), Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.Three public meetings at 7 p.m. in High School Auditorium: on Tuesday Dec. 21, Thursday Jan. 6, and Monday Jan. 17.Virtual meeting on Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. Video About High School Project Informational Resource For questions, email: [email protected] The Plan The Hoboken Board of Education said in a message to the school community a month ago that the new building was proposed due to enrollment increases and due to the aging of the district's school buildings. The building would contain a new athletic field on its roof. It will also contain an ice rink and the long-promised city pool. The present high school on Clinton Street was built in 1962, and is the newest of the district's buildings. The current high school building on Clinton Street would become the city's new middle school. The existing middle school, now held in a 110-year-old former high school once attended by Frank Sinatra, would be turned into an elementary school. Hoboken has 53,000 residents, including many young families.
