Here are the top 5 stories today in Sacramento: Downtown Sacramento Partnership has announced the annual Dine Downtown program will return for its 17th year, January 7 through January 17, 2022. The 24 restaurants (and counting!) will have the option to offer Dine Downtown's infamous three-course, prix fixe menus for dinner, lunch and/or brunch at one of three price points β $25, $35 or $45. In its nearly two decade run to-date, Dine Downtown has generated more than $6 million in restaurant sales for Central City restaurants. (The Sacramento Press) Jeff Osuna has a vision for a Sacramento home, with fresh paint and new plumbing. It's a lot of work and this isn't even his house. It belongs to a 19-year-old named Mackenzie. Mackenzie's Mom, Lisa, passed away unexpectedly after a stroke in April. The teen was thrust into adulthood overnight. Jeff saw Mackenzie's home in desperate need of repairs and upgrades so he stepped up and so did the community. Jeff is a firefighter with the Cosumnes Fire Department. Several of his fellow firefighters are also donating their time and supplies. They've also set up donations online to help Mackenzie get furniture and start her life as a college freshman. (CBS Sacramento) Sacramento Police officers got a call just before 1:30 p.m. Sunday about a shooting near El Camino Avenue and Erickson Street, the Sacramento Police Department said. There, officers found the shooting victim. The man was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries but police said he was conscious and speaking to officers at the time. No suspect information was released. (KCRA3) In an effort to educate and engage Sacramento residents, business owners and community leaders in the City's planning process, the City's Community Development Department will soon be accepting applications for its 2022 Planning Academy. The free, eleven-week virtual course, which begins March 7, 2022, provides participants with a background in the fundamentals of city planning and covers a broad spectrum of planning and development-related topics and issues. Topics include affordable housing, environmental justice, zoning and land use, inclusive economic development, transportation, and climate action planning Applications will open on Dec. 13, 2021 and will be due by 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 7, 2022. Sacramento residents and business owners are invited to apply online. (Sacramento City Express)The Citrus Heights City Council voted unanimously to appoint Porsche Middleton to serve as mayor for the next year, but a subsequent motion to appoint Bret Daniels as vice mayor was shot down in a 3-2 vote. Following the failure of Tim Schaefer's motion to nominate Daniels, a subsequent motion to nominate Schaefer as vice mayor was made by outgoing Mayor Steve Miller. That motion passed unanimously. The annual nomination and ratification of council members became contentious last year when Schaefer and Daniels both voted "no" on the nomination of Miller and Middleton to serve as mayor and vice mayor. Daniels at the time said he felt he had been "intentionally passed over" for a shot at mayor.
