CONCORD, NH — If you are planning on making charitable contributions online, the state has a consumer guide to protect the generous from fraud and abuse. In conjunction with a number of national organizations, the Online Giving Donor & Consumer Guide features tips and warnings to keep people who are being charitable from making unwise choices or being fooled by scammers. It gives guidance pertaining to whether donations go to a intended charity, fees that might be involved with online giving, and what charities do with donor contact information. Ice Harvesting History, Highway Marker Before refrigeration, there were ice boxes. And what filled the ice boxes? Ice blocks. And those ice blocks were harvested, during the winter months, here in New Hampshire. The New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources is honoring one of those ice block companies with its own historical highway marker. Along Route 13 in Brookline, a new marker has been installed honoring The Fresh Pond Ice Company. The company harvested ice from Lake Potanipo and brought it to Boston by rail in the 1890s. "At its peak of operation," the marker said, "the company employed more than 250 people and harvested more than 100,000 tons of ice annually in 13 icehouses." In the 1930s, both a fire at the complex of icehouses as well as electricity ended the business. 'Penalty Box' Or A 'Smack Down'? It was World Wrestling Entertainment on Sunday after Gov. Chris Sununu appeared on "Face the Nation" and got into a back and forth with host Margaret Brennan about mask mandates. The governor said he was not issuing a mask mandate, despite New Hampshire's high COVID-19 infection rate, because it would require a state of emergency order. He likened it to punishment or being in a "penalty box," especially after so many people had already received COVID-19 shots and were making sacrifices. The coronavirus, he added, was not going away any time soon. Brennan scoffed and said, "Penalty box? "No, it's not a penalty box … for people with unvaccinated family members, small children, immunocompromised, it's just putting on a mask." Some, including Raw Story, called it a smack down.
