BEDFORD, NH — A wooded area near Technology Drive where a plane crashed Friday night is surrounded by yellow crime scene tape and the area is secured by Bedford Police and Hillsborough County Sheriffs From the Manchester side of the Merrimack River, in the area of the crash, pieces of the plane were visible and scattered over the secured area. The large wooded area caught fire when the plane crashed has trees and brush that are burned. A steady stream of curious people came to streets off Brown Avenue in Manchester where they could look across the river and see investigators and the crash site. Sources said the site will be active for more than a week as the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board investigate what caused the accident. On Friday night, a resident on Reed Drive told Patch he is used to hearing planes come over the house; his house is in a popular flight path for aircraft to land at the Manchester Boston Regional Airport. The man said he thought it was louder than normal and said: "I heard the engine rev, and then go silent." He looked out the window and saw a ball of fire. A man who lives on Olmstead Avenue on the Manchester side of the river called 911 when he heard a loud noise and looked across to see a large fire. At the time when he called, he thought it was a brush fire. His flight is in direct line with the runway and just a short distance from the crash site. VAS Aviation on YouTube shows the flight coming into the Manchester Boston Regional Airport from the West, and the pilot Emanuel Vomvolakis audio says "Engine Failure." The plane was identified as a Swearingen SA-226AT, a twin-turboprop crashed and broke into pieces and burst into flames. The initial dispatch was to Manchester Fire who septs apparatus including engines, a ladder truck, two boats, and an AMR ambulance. When Manchester firefighters arrived on Olmstead Avenue, they advised the fire was across the river in Bedford. Bedford fire, police, and New Hampshire State Police responded to the wooded area near Technology Drive and near the banks of the Merrimack River.
