Oswego Teen Charged After Fatal Pedestrian Crash In July: Cops

OSWEGO, IL — A 19-year-old Oswego man has been arrested and charged with reckless homicide and aggravated unlawful cell phone use in connection to a Mill Road car crash that killed a pedestrian on July 1, according to Oswego police. Police finished a five-month investigation into the collision that killed 32-year-old Antonio J. Villarreal, an Oswego resident. Villarreal was attempting to cross Mill Road, from Washington Street to Lynx Lane, early that morning when a Nissan Sentra hit him, Patch previously reported. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he died from injuries sustained in the crash. At the time of the crash, Jaylin K. Buckner, of the 600 block of Otter Way, was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. RELATED: Pedestrian Hit On Mill Road Dies: Oswego Police During the investigation into the crash, Oswego police, with help from the Aurora Police Department, conducted forensic analyses on multiple electronic devices, including Buckner's cell phone and the car's Event Data Recorder, police said in a news release. Officials said they determined that at the time of the crash, Buckner was driving more than 20 miles over the speed limit. Using data and the crash reconstruction map, police were also able to confirm the teenager was using a social media app on his phone. The Kendall County State's Attorney's Office approved on Dec. 8 two felony counts of reckless homicide and one felony count of aggravated unlawful use of an electronic communication device against Buckner, and a Kendall County judge issued a warrant for the teenager's arrest, officials said. The judge set the man's bond at $250,000 with 10 percent to apply. Buckner turned himself in on the warrant at 11:45 p.m. Dec. 10. He was processed at the Oswego Police Department and taken to the Kendall County Public Safety Center ahead of a bond hearing.
