Social Media Threat Prompts Extra Security At Chapel Hill MS

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — Chapel Hill Middle School officials said an alleged threat was made against the school via social media, and extra officers are on campus Monday in response to the threat, Douglas County School System spokesperson Portia Lake told Patch in an email. Parents received a message from the district Monday morning, saying there was a threat to CHMS posted on social media Sunday night. The DCSS Police Department, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and administrators are investigating the threat, and parents are expected to be informed of the outcome. However, Lake said there's no emergency on campus. School is continuing as normal Monday. In the meantime, extra officers are at school Monday and "we will be very vigilant with our safety protocols," CHMS Principal Catherine Westbrook said in the first message. In a follow-up message, Westbrook said administrators have "directed resources to safeguard the safety of CHMS and other schools." "Our school is taking additional precautions today to ensure all Chapel Hill Middle School students are safe and feel safe," Westbrook said. "The safety and welfare of students and staff in our district are paramount. All threats to our campus security are taken seriously." Anyone with additional information about the threat is asked to contact the CHMS administrative team. "We appreciate your help as we work together to keep our students safe. I appreciate your support as we work together to ensure the safety and security of our students," Westbrook said. No other details about the specific threat, a motive or information about who posted the threat were available as of Monday morning.
