HUDSON VALLEY, NY — 'Tis the season for giving back to your community. There are a number of ways that you and your family can help out through the holidays and help others. Every day through Christmas, Patch will be highlighting a way you can provide compassion and resources to those in need. Volunteer New York! makes it easy to find ways to help — through donations, supporting nonprofits and even volunteering from home. Today's opportunity is for Meals on Wheels of Rockland County. The organization is looking for volunteers to create Blizzard Boxes that will be delivered to hungry families during emergencies. Blizzard boxes contain an assortment of donated non-perishable food items packed into shoeboxes. They are delivered to Meals on Wheels' recipients in case normal food deliveries are halted due to weather-related or other emergencies. Because this is a year-round project there is no deadline, and students and volunteers who must fulfill community service hours can receive one hour per completed box.
