Here are the top 5 stories today in Sacramento: City crews started at 6 a.m. Saturday morning scooping up huge mounds of leaves from around city parks and neighborhoods, working to keep sewers and storm drains open and unclogged, so rainwater can flow inside, instead of flooding streets, parks and yards ahead of the big storm. Rodney Morgan, a tree care specialist, said year-round maintenance is critical. For now, his crew is on standby in case they're needed. SMUD line crews are at the ready. (FOX40 & ABC10)Sacramento Police are investigating a case of hate crime vandalism against the vice principal of West Campus High School back in November. Now they need the public's help to identify people seen on newly-released surveillance camera footage. Dr. Elysse Versher, the school's vice principal, says she was the victim of racist language that was targeted at her. Versher believes a student who was previously disciplined for violating school rules, as well as other students, are behind it. (KCRA3)A big Christmas parade was held Saturday in Downtown Sacramento bringing a lively holiday spirit to the city. The Christmas celebration was a parade featuring music, floats, marching units, and, of course, Santa himself. Some of the highlights were a lifesize Ectomobile from the film Ghostbusters and a giant teddy bear carrying a live band. (Good Day Sacramento) Two Sacramento Fire department members are headed to Kentucky. The local firefighters are part of the California-FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Taskforce Incident Support Team. They were deployed to assist after the swarm of tornadoes swept through at least six states. (Good Day Sacramento)Four people were hospitalized for burns and smoke inhalation after an apartment building caught fire early Saturday morning in North Sacramento, according to the Sacramento Fire Department. An upstairs apartment at the building on Rio Linda Boulevard caught fire, causing damage to several other apartments. The large response shut down the block between Eleanor Avenue and Edgewood Avenue, as Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department and Sacramento Fire Department responded to the blaze. If storm projections are accurate, Sacramento will likely see more rain in these first three months of the 2021/2022 water year than we saw during the entire year of 2020/2021.
