LIBERTYVILLE, IL — Charges have been filed against a drug dealer after a couple was found dead in a hotel room in Libertyville last month.
The bodies of Robert Callen, 35, and Amanda Dubin, 34, were discovered after staff at the Motel 6, at 809 N. Milwaukee Ave., went to check on the room and heard a baby crying inside at about 11 a.m. on Nov. 13, according to authorities.
The staff found the baby, who had no physical injures, lying on the floor near Callen and Dubin. The couple checked into the hotel the night before.
Last week, the Lake County State's Attorney's Office filed drug-induced homicide and unlawful devilry of a controlled substance containing fentanyl charges against Erick Ruiz, 22, of the 5900 block of Cobblestone Trail in McHenry, in connection with the deaths, according to a news release from the state's attorney's office. He remains behind bars on a $1 million bail.
The charges come followed an investigation by the Libertyville Police Department, which revealed Ruiz supplied Callen and Dubin with a substance that contained fentanyl, according to a news release from the police department. Initial toxicology results showed the parents had fentanyl, an extremely strong opiate, in their systems.
"People who choose to make their money by dealing deadly drugs like heroin and fentanyl know that overdoses are on the rise. They know that these chemicals will kill," Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart said.
Ruiz is next expected in court on Jan. 12 for a preliminary hearing.
