Description
Dads Can Save the Lives of Black Babies and Strengthen the Lives of Black Families. African American/Black fathers have historically been ignored in maternal health and infant care programs. However, research shows that when fathers are involved in maternal infant health care: Babies are healthier at birth and 4 times more likely to celebrate their first birthday, less likely to experience Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and have improved learning and emotional development.Children are more likely to go to well-baby visits, have higher developmental scores and fewer behavior problems later in life. (Maternal and Infant Health Center, June 2017)In 2018, California established the Perinatal Equity Initiative (PEI) to address the alarming gap in Black infant mortality statewide. Did You Know: Black infant mortality continues to be 2 to 4 times higher than other racial or ethnic groups.Fatherhood Initiatives is one of the interventions supported by the Perinatal Equity Initiative in reducing Black infant mortality.San Bernardino Fatherhood’s goal is to reducing Black Infant mortality by spreading a cultural awareness of father inclusion and responsible fatherhood in the attitudes and behaviors of African American fathers and communities.
