Playing with Memoir: Inspiring the Willing, Transforming the Reluctant, Connecting through Creative Community Playing with Memoir: Inspiring the Willing, Transforming the Reluctant, Connecting through Creative Community This is a series of four workshops: January 8, 15, 22, 29 from 1-3 p.m. Each of us is chock full of stories, from existential epiphanies that changed our life path to ephemeral moments that still bring beauty. Sometimes those stories are right at the surface, all that’s needed is the opportunity to write and someone who wants to hear it. Sometimes they are hiding behind a wall of fears: “I wish I knew how to properly write that.” or “I’m not a published writer so it’s not worth my time,” or maybe, “I think it’s a good story but is it really?” Some stories are buried deeply. They need the right tools to dig them up, see what’s there, then dust them off and maybe polish them up. Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe they remain dusty for a minute or forever. It doesn’t matter if they get polished. It doesn’t matter if no one reads it but you. It is enough that you write it for you. However… there is magic in sharing, in speaking your story aloud and finding out that no one laughs or mocks, the world keeps spinning. Sometimes even, miraculously, people are grateful for your story because it helps them in some way. We will pull those stories out with lists, commonplacing, freewriting, and inspiration. All you need to bring for this week is openness to the process and your favorite way to write. I always have both a good pen, a crappy notebook, and my laptop because some stories want to fly out quickly and some want to drift out through a pen. There is no need for any prep work. We will all begin together in the same space- with the blank page.
