HUDSON VALLEY, NY — 'Tis the season for giving back to your community. There are a number of ways that you and your family can help out through the holidays and help others. Every day through Christmas, Patch will be highlighting a way you can provide compassion and resources to those in need. Volunteer New York! makes it easy to find ways to help — through donations, supporting nonprofits and even volunteering from home. Today's opportunity is for the Sharing Shelf, which is looking for volunteers to help address a basic human need — by collecting and assembling essential items into Hygiene Kits to keep newborns and young infants clean and protect them from diaper rash. Organizers said SNAP benefits — otherwise known as food stamps — don't cover hygiene products, and thousands of cash-strapped families are struggling right now to provide food and shelter. Hygiene products, such as baby wipes, diaper rash cream and baby shampoo, have become luxuries they cannot afford. This is self-directed project is great for students, families and coworkers.
