PEABODY, MA — Samantha Faulkner is hoping that sharing her story of nearly $400 in packages being swiped from her front steps will lead to the arrest of those responsible for the case of Peabody porch piracy. The Peabody resident shared a surveillance video on social media that starts with a car pulling up in front of her house early Thursday night and turning around. She said the car then went up a side street next to her house, turned around in a neighbor's driveway and parked next to her house. "The man comes up to my porch, drops a package on top of mine and then picks them all up, and takes them all, and gets into the car next to my house and leaves," she posted along with the video on a Peabody community Facebook page. She told Patch when contacted about the video: "Please share it and get it out there! I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else!" She said Peabody police were notified and that the items in the packages are worth about $375. "(Peabody police are) out looking for the guy now because he's surely still going," she said, "but I swear I am losing all faith in humanity lately." "Please share it and get it out there! I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else!" - Peabody resident and porch pirate victim Samantha Faulkner. (Samantha Faulkner) According to the National Neighborhood Watch, nearly one in four adults in the United States has reported having a package stolen at least once. Here are some tips for helping make sure your holiday packages make it all the way inside your house: • Consider getting a P.O. box at your local post office or having packages delivered to your office• Set up notifications to track your packages• Install a security camera in the area(s) outside your home where packages may be delivered• Require a signature upon delivery to ensure packages are never left unattended• Reschedule delivery or ask for a package hold when on vacation• Research potential home security technology and locking device options to protect and monitor packages• Ask your neighbors to grab your packages for safekeeping until you return home• Sign up for the USPS "Informed Delivery" service, where you can get a daily email with a picture/scan of the mail you will receive that day. To sign up, click here.• If you believe you have fallen victim to package theft, you should do the following:• Confirm with your delivery company that your package was actually delivered• Identify which package was stolen and what the contents of that package were• Contact the police immediately and report your package as stolen• If you have a security camera on your home, give a copy of the video to police• Report the package theft to the applicable carrier (Scott Souza is a Patch field editor covering Beverly, Danvers, Marblehead, Peabody, Salem and Swampscott.
