NEWTON, MA — KOKO Bakery, a French and Japanese artisan bakery in Newton, has announced that its owner is retiring on Christmas Eve and the bakery will be opening with a new name under new management in 2022. KOKO Bakery, which opened five years ago on California Street, serves unique bread, pastries, sandwiches, and Ozawa coffee. Its current owner, Nobuko Maruyama, was formally trained at a popular chain bakery in Japan and King Arthur in Vermont. She has worked for several Boston-area bakeries, including at the Boston Harbor Hotel, The Langham Hotel, and the MIT catering department. One of Maruyama's employees, Manokasemsant Duangporn, will take over the management of the bakery, which is slated to re-open in February after a month-long break in January. Under its new name, the business will continue to offer many of the same recipes and treats. "Thank you very sincerely for all your support over the past five years," said KOKO Bakery in an announcement last week. "And Happy Holidays!" The bakery will be open on December 22, 23, and 24. On those three days, Maruyama will be offering gifts to all loyal customers. Updates on KOKO Bakery's reopening will be available on their Facebook page and Instagram.
