AUSTIN, TX — Two male road crew workers are dead after a car veered off the road and struck them on the service road for Interstate 35 in south Austin on Friday. The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. on the 4900 block of the northbound service road for I-35 near the intersection of Teri Road, according to Austin-Travis County EMS. EMS officials said two pedestrians were struck and killed and the driver of the car was pinned and needed to be extracted by first responders. MTF.— ATCEMS (@ATCEMS) December 10, 2021 A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2015 Porsche was traveling northbound on the road when it left the roadway and struck two road crew members who were working on the side of the road installing road signs, Austin police told reporters Friday afternoon. Both of the crew members were men in their thirties, officials said. Other crew members were present on scene but were reportedly not injured. Police said speed was a factor in the crash and intoxication could have played a role. Police said it is still too early to tell what the cause of the crash was, but detectives plan to obtain a search warrant for the driver's blood-alcohol level.
