Here are the top 5 stories in Sacramento today: Kathy Lester, a 27-year veteran of the Sacramento Police Department, will become the city's first woman police chief. Lester has been promoted to succeed Chief Daniel Hahn after his retirement at the end of the year as the head of a department with more than 1,100 sworn and civilian staff. Hahn was Sacramento's first Black police chief. Lester got her start with the department as a dispatcher in 1994 and became a sworn officer two years later. (KCRA3)Sacramento State is using COVID-19 relief funding to clear debt for some of its currently enrolled students. The funds are being used to cancel unpaid registration fees for nearly 1,400 students. School officials hope clearing that debt for students will help with retention rates and ease their path to earning a degree. (KCRA3)Hundreds came out to celebrate the Annual Installation and Awards Banquet for the Sacramento Black Chamber of Commerce. Sacramento Police Chief Daniel Hahn was presented with the Chamber's Champion's Award "because he has done so much not only for the small business community but for all our communities here in Sacramento," said Azizza Davis Goines, the president for Sacramento Black Chamber of Commerce."We're sorry to see him go." Chief Hahn will be retiring at the end of the year. (ABC10)Sacramento Public Library Authority Board is pleased to announce that Peter Coyl has been named Library Director and CEO. Coyl will take the helm of Sacramento Public Library on January 3, 2022 and will lead California's fourth largest library system with its 28 locations serving Sacramento County. Since 2017, Coyl has served as Director of the Montclair Public Library, one of the busiest municipal libraries in New Jersey. Coyl's love for libraries started at Sacramento Public Library where he was issued his first library card when he was 5 years old. (Saclibrary.org)The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, at its Dec. 8 meeting, approved the recommended budget priorities to be used in the development of the FY 2022-23 budget. The budget priorities were a result of the County's Community Engagement Plan to develop priorities for the budget based on public input and the results of a survey of adult residents of Sacramento County.
