LONG BEACH, CA — A 102-year-old woman was killed in Long Beach when a relative's unattended vehicle rolled down the driveway and into her walker, police said Friday.
Helen Morris was seated in her "rolling walker" Thursday afternoon when the vehicle struck her according to the Long Beach Police Department. The accident occurred at about 3:40 p.m. Thursday in the 4500 block of Tolbert Avenue. Morris was rushed to a nearby hospital where she died, according to police.
"The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was seated in a rolling walker on the sidewalk in front of her residence," police said in a statement. "An unattended vehicle that was parked in her driveway began to roll backwards and struck the pedestrian.
"Family members who witnessed the collision stopped the vehicle from rolling any further and provided aid to the pedestrian until paramedics arrived. It is unclear at this time what caused the vehicle to roll backwards. ... The last operator of the vehicle, a family member, remained on scene and was cooperating with the investigation."
Anyone with information on the case was urged to call police at 562- 570-7355, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
