AGOURA HILLS, CA —Four mountain lion kittens were found under a picnic table outside a Thousand Oaks office building, according to the National Park Service. The kittens were all females around six weeks old. They were found on Nov. 29 a little thin and alone, NPS said in a news release. Two of the mountain lions died shortly after biologists found and tagged them as part of their program to track and study mountain lions in the Santa Monica mountains. The surviving kittens are labeled P-101 and P-103. The kittens were all found between three and a half and four and a half pounds huddled together in a "makeshift 'den'" near the office building, NPS said. P-101 and P-103 were taken to a veterinary hospital in Orange County where they are still being treated. They will be given temporarily to the Orange County Zoo until they can be put in a more permanent location, NPS said. The kittens will be the newest tagged lions in NPS' NPS has already tagged 99 other mountain lions, most recently a two to three year old female tagged in September. Community members often follow these mountain lions throughout their lives, and many have shown excitement on social media about the new lion's identification. Community members have told Patch that they remember when some tagged mountain lions, like P-54, gave birth to their cubs, and have watched neighbors rally around the animals. Many were sad to discover it was P-54's cub that was involved in a high profile attack in Monte Nido in August. Another NPS mountain lion, P-22, has also become a local celebrity for her cameos in Griffith Park, LAist reported.
