Zoo Idaho's mission is ‘Preserving Intermountain West wildlife and habitat through conservation and education’.The Zoo started in 1932 as a small exotic facility with one raccoon and chimpanzee. During the mid-70s the zoo committed to exhibiting only indigenous species of the Intermountain West. As the zoo transitioned it developed a strong relationship with the Idaho Fish and Game and the US Fish and Wildlife Service to acquire animals that could no longer thrive within the wild. The zoo, in a sense, became a sanctuary. Starting in 2014, Zoo Idaho has placed significant emphasis on conservation and education. Education programs increased throughout the Pocatello. Zoo Idaho works with public & private organizations to develop projects and exhibits focusing on Idaho conservation. We currently provide programming to approx 10,000 people a year.
