NEW YORK CITY — As the coronavirus pandemic shut down New York City and many of its vibrant offerings, city officials found a way to use some of the sudden empty space for good. Empty city streets were used for outdoor dining spaces for restaurants forced to close because of COVID-19 restrictions while other open spaces were utilized for community programs to offer activities that could not take place in indoor spaces. The Department of Transportation announced Thursday that it is again accepting applications for the city's Open Streets and Public Spaces programming initiative. The Open Streets program is open to community-based organizations, schools, restaurants and other groups and is open until April 29, 2022, with other application periods to follow, the city said in a news release. The Open Streets initiative is offering full- or partial funding is available to all non-profit community Open Street partners, the city said. Educational and cultural programming will be brought to diverse communities citywide, with a focus on equity. For new locations, the Department of Transportation is looking forward to working closely with applicants to identify resources for the safe and successful execution of an Open Street, officials said. Applications for Public Space programming include arts, culture, fitness, or educational experiences, will be accepted until January 28, and selected applicants will be announced in February. Previously announced public funding supports the program and will help it expand into underserved parts of the city, DOT officials said. "During the pain of the pandemic, New Yorkers helped us reimagine miles of our streets as lively spaces where we can dine out, meet with friends and neighbors, or just enjoy our neighborhoods," DOT Commissioner Hank Gutman said in the release Thursday. "This fantastic program is getting better and better as we work hard to ensure people around the city can access these vibrant public spaces right in front of their doorsteps." Applications to apply for both Open Streets and Public Space Programming are online, officials said, and are open for new and returning applicants.
