NEW HAVEN, CT — Renee Dominguez, who has been leading the Police Department as its acting chief, plans to retire after the Board of Alders declined this week to appoint her as the next permanent chief, the New Haven Independent reports. She will remain at the helm until a new police chief is selected as part of a nationwide search, the New Haven Independent reports. Mayor Justin Eleicker, who nominated Dominguez last month, said in a statement earlier this week that, a "failure to confirm her at that time will be a major blow to public safety." Elicker called the no vote "disappointing" and "disheartening to the women and men of the department that strap on a vest each night and head out to patrol our streets." In early November, after months as interim police chief, Elicker tapped Dominguez as the city's permanent top law enforcement official.
