High: 50 Low: 35. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: A crash along southbound Highway 99 snarled traffic for the morning commute on Thursday. The crash happened just before 6:30 a.m. near Dillard Road, south of Elk Grove. Exactly what led up to the crash is unclear, but a big rig and a sedan appear to have been involved. The lanes were cleared by around 7:15 a.m. (CBS Sacramento)The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said its deputies on Wednesday arrested two teens accused of making threats against an Elk Grove high school. A 16-year-old male student and a 16-year-old female student were both arrested in connection with posts which threatened gun violence and explosions at Laguna Creek High School, the sheriff's office said. Both students were left in the care of their families with a promise to appear in court at a future date. Elk Grove Unified School District's spokesperson Xanthi Soriano said disciplinary measures against its students are always kept confidential, but appropriate action will be taken. (KCRA3)A high-risk traffic stop resulted in the arrests of two Sacramento residents and the seizure of a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun by Yolo County sheriff deputies. On Dec. 7, in the area of County Road 118 and Old River Road, deputies heard several gunshots, according to a Facebook post from the Yolo County Sheriff's Office. It became apparent that the shots were coming from an occupant inside a moving vehicle. In addition to the handgun, deputies seized multiple high-capacity pistol magazines, over 200 rounds of ammunition and over two pounds of marijuana. The two occupants of the vehicle were booked into Yolo County Jail. (Woodland Daily Democrat)A father and son were arrested in connection with causing the Caldor Fire, one of the most threatening wildfires this year that burned miles of forest, leveled Grizzly Flats and forced unprecedented evacuations in El Dorado County. According to the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office, 32-year-old Travis Smith of Folsom and 66-year-old David Smith of Somerset were arrested Wednesday and booked into the El Dorado County Jail on "reckless arson" charges. "Without hesitation, I say these people are 100% innocent," their attorney Mark Reichel said. At this time, the El Dorado County District Attorney has not released details of what led to the reckless arson charges. (KCRA3)The Sacramento County unemployment rate was 5.8 percent in October, down from 6.1 percent in September. That reflected some improvement from October 2020, when the unemployment rate stood at 8.8 percent. The October unemployment rate in Sacramento County was also lower than the California rate of 6.1 percent, according to the latest figures from the BLS.
