COVENTRY, RI — The Coventry Town Council is calling for the General Assembly to fund a study into Johnson's Pond. The study would be conducted by the Department of Environmental Management, and would comprehensively review the recreational uses and environmental habitats of the pond. The council unanimously approved the resolution at its meeting Nov. 29, town officials said Thursday. If approved, the study would help the DEM in its role of regulating Coventry's freshwater wetlands, the town said. The council urged Coventry residents to reach out to their local representative and senator to encourage them to support the resolution and fund the study. "Active engagement with, and communication to, your state legislators is necessary to encourage them to sign on and support sending the funding to RI DEM for this valuable tool to allow RI DEM to perform critical regulatory functions over Johnson's Pond and its freshwater wetlands," the town said in a statement.
