MIDLOTHIAN, IL — Two senior citizens were killed and another elderly driver injured after the driver suffered a "medical event" that caused him to hit two pedestrians with his car outside a Midlothian Department of Motor Vehicles, officials said Wednesday. Midlothian police told Patch they responded to the scene at 14434 Pulaski Road Wednesday at around 1 p.m. Once firefighters and officials arrived, they saw an elderly man behind the wheel of a car that had crashed into the front of the DMV building and a man and a woman in critical condition in the parking lot. According to initial reports, police said the man had a medical incident which caused him to accelerate his vehicle, crashing into several parked cars, two elderly pedestrians and finally crashing into the building. The driver and both pedestrians were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition. The two pedestrians — later identified as Kathleen Coyne and Thomas Coyne — were later pronounced dead. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, Thomas Coyne was a resident of Oak Lawn. ABC7 reported Kathleen, 75, and Thomas, 80, were brother and sister. Officials did not have an update on the driver's condition as of Thursday afternoon. The South Suburban Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident.
