Happy Friday, Atlanta! Let's start today off on an informed note, shall we? Here's everything happening today in Atlanta. First, today's weather: Cloudy, showers around; mild. High: 65 Low: 61. Here are the top stories today in Atlanta: A third case of COVID-19 with the Omicron variant has been reported in Georgia, according to the state Department of Public Health. The individual, an unvaccinated metro Atlanta resident with no recent international travel history, is isolating at home with mild COVID symptoms, health officials said Thursday. Contact tracing is underway to identify close contacts at risk of infection. Two cases of the Omicron variant have previously been confirmed in metro Atlanta residents, along with cases in at least 21 states and dozens of countries around the world. Judging from preliminary data, Omicron may cause less severe illness but may spread more easily than the Delta variant. (CBS46 News Atlanta) Police are searching for two men who robbed a metro Atlanta Waffle House at gunpoint. Authorities in Clayton County said two men entered a Riverdale Waffle House on Dec. 3 and, after approaching the counter, one of the suspects pulled out a pistol and demanded money from an employee. The other suspect jumped over the counter, police said, and took money out of the register. Riverdale authorities said the men are considered armed and dangerous and encouraged anyone with information to call police. Over 6 million companion animals annually are surrendered to pounds nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. But ASPCA data show that only about half of these animals are adopted, meaning millions of four-legged furry friends — some here in the Atlanta area — are waiting for their forever homes. With help from Petfinder, Patch compiled a list of 55 dogs and cats available for adoption this week near you. Check out the adorable photos. One of these animals just might add the jingle-jangle your holidays are missing. (Atlanta Patch)An Atlanta-area landscaping company has been ordered to pay $175,000 in back wages and penalties to migrant laborers. After investigators uncovered multiple violations of guest-worker program rules, a Gwinnett County landscaping company, Resendiz Pine Straw LLC, was ordered to pay fines as well as a total of $136,971 in back wages to 110 migrant workers who have been underpaid by the company. The Sugar Hill-based landscaper has also been barred by the U.S. Department of Labor from participating in the agricultural guest worker program, known as the H-2A temporary worker program, for three years. H-2A allows agricultural employers to address labor shortages by hiring temporary workers from outside the U.S. Georgia is second only to Florida for the most H-2A laborers in the nation, with the majority coming from Mexico and Central America. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)Wednesday, the Georgia High School Association set new regions for classes 3A to A after approving seven appeals to move down and rejecting seven others. Jordan and Spencer were approved to move down to Class 2A. Mount Vernon and Pelham were approved for Class A Division 1. Trion was approved for Class A Division 2. Chattahoochee County and Seminole County were approved to Class A Division 2. The GHSA denied appeals to ACE Charter, Gordon Lee, Bacon County, Commerce, Early County, Irwin County and Schley County.
