Description
BRAND NEW: 4-WEEK BRAZILIAN ENSEMBLE at Morningside Music-coached and organized by multi-instrumentalist and Brazilian music performer, lecturer and researcher David Rumpler Several people have asked me about the possibility of creating a weekly Brazilian ensemble, and I am currently organizing one that would meet either Saturdays or Sundays at Morningside Music Studio in Arlington, MA. The group would be limited to 5 students, ideally a bassist, a drummer or percussionist, a pianist or guitarist, a singer, and a sax or trumpet player. I will coach the ensemble and provide sheet music (chord changes and melody). The repertoire will include songs by Jobim, Ivan Lins, Milton Nascimento (and others) and cover styles such as bossa nova, samba, choro, baião, xote. I lived in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro for 2.5 years and have been performing and teaching Brazilian music professionally for over 30 years. I teach jazz and Brazilian guitar (BA in Music from Ithaca College) as well as jazz piano, and a have strong background in Brazilian percussion. I’ve also sung in Portuguese for the past twenty years and can provide transliterated Portuguese and vocal coaching for non-Brazilians. The ensemble will meet at Morningside Music Studio (in Arlington Center) once a week for 90 minutes. There is a flat fee $125 per month. All members (and myself) must be vaccinated. Morningside will provide a piano, a microphone and P.A. for singers, drums, and amps for guitar and bass. Prerequisites: Instrumentalists should have some experience playing music that uses intermediate level chords (C13, C7b9, C-7b5), and should be able to read rhythms and melodies from a simple lead sheet. Learning by listening to Mp3s of repertoire is also encouraged. NOTE: On Saturday December 18th at 4:30pm I will be doing a _separate_ 90 minute talk called “Brazilian Music: Basic Rhythms, Styles and History” that is more a of a music appreciation class and is open to anyone ($10). When you contact me, please specify if you are interested in playing in the new weekly ensemble, or the talk on December 18th.
