Description
Intro to Woodworking. Designed to get you comfortable in the woodshop - with using common machines along with hand tools at the workbench. Date(s): April 11 through April 16. Six class days. 9am - 5pm Instructor: Andy Glenn Description: This class is designed for anyone interested in a full week immersion into a furniture-making workshop. The class is designed to use both machine tools and hand tools in making a small, dovetailed keepsake box. The box will be a collection of all the skills and techniques we cover throughout the week. We'll start in the machine shop, discussing lumber selection and milling processes. Then we'll work the wood through the common machines - the bandsaw, jointer, planer, and table saw. If machine will be discussed regarding safety and usage. After milling the parts, we'll head to the bench room with our hand tools. We'll sharpen our chisels and planes (all hand tool woodworking builds off a foundation of sharp tools - plus it is WAY more fun to work with sharp tools). Then we'll get into plane use and dovetailing. This class is about both skills and techniques. My hope, after going through this class, is that you will feel comfortable returning to your shop to make your next project. The hand tool list is needed for constructing the small box. They're not specialized for this class though. They're common woodworking tools commonly found within a furniture making kit. We'll have extra to share if your kit is incomplete. Please email instructor Andy Glenn at [email protected] with any questions. Tool List: recommended: chisels (1/4", 1/2" and 1" or equivalent sizes) handplane: either a #3 or #4 dovetail saw marking gauge combination square bevel gauge card scraper mallet optional: tape measure safety glasses hearing protection sharpening stone (if you have one...no need to purchase one if you do not) Berea College has re-opened the former Kelly Mehler School of Woodworking under the leadership of Berea College Head of Woodcraft Andy Glenn as The Woodworking School at Pine Croft. Both Andy and Berea College are dedicated to preserving the fundamental character the school has been known for as we move the school into its next phase. The Woodworking School at Pine Croft further supports Berea College’s 120-year commitment to the preservation and promotion of craft. While in some ways woodworking is an individual pursuit, there are common traits that connect across makers: a desire to expand our skills, furnish our homes, surround ourselves with the handmade, and join a community of dedicated craftspeople. We believe that craft can both preserve traditions and beauty – and that craft can act as a counterbalance to a disposable and consumer-reliant world. Making is essential to us. We are excited to share a place where students can grow in their skills and fulfill their creative pursuits. Providing opportunities to work with leading instructors who come from diverse backgrounds and have different woodworking perspectives. All are welcome to attend
