Description
PRINCETON, NJ — The Witherspoon-Jackson Historical and Cultural Society will be unveiling 29 Heritage Tour plaques in the neighborhood on Dec. 11. These plaques will enable anyone to take a self-guided walking tour of the Witherspoon-Jackson neighborhood and learn the history of these places.
The Witherspoon-Jackson neighborhood is Princeton's 20th historic district. The public is invited to a special walking tour, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. The tour will begin at the Arts Council of Princeton and end with a reception at Studio Hillier at 190 Witherspoon Street.
Princeton's original African American residents occupied this segregated district since the early 19th century. The history of these 29 locations was prepared by Shirley A. Satterfield, historian of African American Life. Each plaque is sponsored by an individual, family, or organization, and the sponsors' names are printed at the bottom of the plaque.
