MURRIETA, CA — The Murrieta Valley Unified School District Board of Education is seeking a replacement for Area 1 Trustee Oscar Rivas due to his resignation, and candidates interested in the position must apply by 10 a.m. on Jan. 3. During a special meeting Wednesday night of the MVUSD board, the trustees voted unanimously to make a provisional appointment to fill the vacancy. Rivas resigned Nov. 22 due to a change of residency in the city that put him outside of his Area 1 boundary lines. Anyone interested in filling the seat must live in Area 1. The Area 1 Trustee map. At that time, the appointed candidate can seek election to fill the trustee's four-year term. "Being a part of the Board of Education for the last three years has been an extremely fulfilling experience," Rivas said. "I remain dedicated to continuing my work related to strengthening parent and family engagement strategies within MVUSD. I am thankful that my children will continue attending their MVUSD schools." MVUSD Board President Linda Lunn said Rivas was "an exemplary board member" and repeatedly demonstrated a commitment to students and family engagement. "While we are saddened to see him resign, we are looking forward to his continued involvement with our different parent advisory committees and presence at school events," Lunn said. The district is now accepting applications from qualified candidates who would like to be considered for the Area 1 appointment. Qualified candidates must be: 1. A California registered voter residing within the MVUSD Trustee Area 1 boundaries; 2. At least 18 years of age; 3. Not disqualified by the constitution or laws of the state from holding a civil office; 4. Not an employee of MVUSD. Application packets are available online on the MVUSD website: www.murrieta.k12.ca.us/BOEvacancy or in person at the MVUSD District Support Center, 41870 McAlby Court, Murrieta, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Completed application packets can be mailed via U.S. postal service or delivered in person to the District Support Center. Applications can also be submitted via email to Julie Diaz at [email protected]. All completed applications must be submitted no later than 10 a.m. on January 3, 2022.
