Police ID Carjacking Suspect Shot And Killed By Officer On I-5

PORTLAND, OR — Portland police have identified the suspect who was killed in Monday's officer-involved shooting on Interstate 5. Brandon L. Keck, 30, was shot and killed after allegedly committing an armed carjacking, and while attempting to commit another, according to police. On Tuesday, the Portland police revealed that officer John Hughes, a 17-year veteran of the bureau, had shot the suspect. Hughes was put on paid administrative leave until the completion of the investigation. Police said the investigation into Monday's events is ongoing. According to police accounts, officers initially responded at 9:30 a.m. to reports of a home invasion and a stolen car near Northeast Grant Place and 32nd Avenue. Officers said they learned the suspect eventually ditched the first stolen car, and then forced passengers out of a second car at gunpoint. The second car, a Saab, was spotted traveling the wrong direction on I-5, before it crashed near Rosa Parks Way. At that point, the suspect attempted to steal another car at gunpoint and was shot by officers, police said. Initially, police reported that during one of the carjackings, the suspect fired a shot and injured a female victim, who was treated at a local hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. On Wednesday, the PPB said they've determined that the female victim who reported that she had been shot, was not in fact injured by gunfire. The bureau said it was working to determine the cause of her injury.
