Throughout the merry month of December, Children’s Museum of Atlanta invites families to celebrate a variety of holidays with its annual Celebrations in Light programming. Plus, Sockefeller Plaza returns for kids to grab their favorite pair of socks and skate the 200-square-foot rink! Friends and family will explore the holiday season with art, science, design and on-stage programming. December Special Programming: Celebrations in Light Las Posadas Saturday, Dec. 11 Alma Mexicana Danza Folklórica will be onsite to help lead the festivities. During this Christian celebration observed in some parts of Latin America, families recreate Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem in nightly processions. Traditionally a group of people sing religious or holiday songs house to house and will get invited into the home for the festival and holiday treats. CMA On Stage Las Posadas Storytime + traditional Mexican dancing with Alma Mexicana Danza Folklórica Session A: 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon / Session B: 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. *performer only on stage at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Innovation Station Kiddos will learn how to dip-dye their own ribbons! Session A: 9:45 a.m. / Session B 1:45 p.m. Art Studio Guests can make snowflakes as well as Hanukkah, Las Posadas, Christmas and Kwanzaa crafts. Session A: 9:45 a.m. / Session B 1:45 p.m. Christmas Saturday, Dec. 18 Parents and children will honor the holiday with Piccadilly Puppets sharing a tale of Christmas spirit and friendship between a hungry fox and a lonely bunny. Santa might even make an appearance! CMA On Stage Christmas Storytime + puppet show led by Piccadilly Puppets Session A: 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon / Session B: 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. *performer only on stage at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Kwanzaa Sunday, Dec. 26 Kwanzaa is a weeklong African American holiday that celebrates family, community and culture. Created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, the holiday is founded on seven guiding principles to be talked about on each day of the celebration. This holiday is similar to Christmas where the holiday culminates with gift giving and a big feast. Mama Koku’s Storytellin’ will join in to help kids learn more about Kwanzaa. CMA On Stage Storytime: Kwanzaa Storytime with Mama Koku’s Storytellin’ Session A: 11 a.m. / Session B: 3 p.m. Additional Special programming: Computer Science Education Week Through Dec. 12 Dash the robot will make a special appearance in celebration of Computer Science Education Week! Kids can visit the Science Bar for plugged and unplugged computer science activities like magic card tricks and helping coding mice to their cheese. Guests can experience all of this and more while learning about famous computer scientists like Grace Hopper, Annie Easley and Evelyn Boyd Granville. Friday Jam Sessions Fridays, Dec. 10 and 17 Little ones will rock and roll their way into the weekend with high energy, music-filled activities and foster a love of music in their favorite pajamas! After the dance party, guests will receive a hot cocoa kit to take home. Session A: 11:45 a.m. / Session B 3:45 p.m. Winter Scavenger Hunt While kids play, they will search for lights, decorations, games, story times, crafts and more! Groups who complete the scavenger hunt will receive a prize. Session A: 9:30 a.m. / Session B 1:30 p.m. Bubble Bash Friday, Dec. 31 The museum is throwing a special kid-friendly New Year’s countdown with tons of laughs, dancing, games, and more. Guests can enjoy music from the DJ, make their own noisemakers and party hats, DIY bubble solution, and ring in the new year with the yearly bubble-wrap-popping tradition! Tickets are $20 each or $10 for Museum Members. Tickets sell out fast, so we recommend buying early to get in on the fun! * Session A: noon / Session B 4 p.m. Continuing in December: Continuing through Jan. 2 Rube Goldberg™: The World of Hilarious Invention! Exhibit Inspired by Pulitzer Prize winning humorist and inventor Rube Goldberg’s iconic contraptions, humorous storytelling and inventive cartoons, the Rube Goldberg™: The World of Hilarious Invention! Exhibit immerses children in a collection of new 3D, life-sized machines and hands-on, interactive components that connect Rube’s cartoon contraptions to the way things work in the physical world. The engaging experiences provide insight into the legacy of Rube Goldberg and how classic engineering principles can be reimagined as entry points for deeper exploration of STEAM concepts for 21st-century learning. Children’s Museum of Atlanta continues to prioritize the health and safety of its guests, offering elevated health precautions for a comfortable visit.
