This full-day course provides a foundation for coffee professionals and serious enthusiasts to develop their knowledge and understanding of specialty coffee.
Eight hours of lectures and hands-on activities cover topics including:The origin, history, and growth of the specialty coffee industry serves as a primer for professionals and serious coffee enthusiasts in every aspect of specialty coffee.Specialty coffee farming and processingBrewing methods and extraction principlesAn introduction to roasting and its impact on coffee flavorEach segment includes a lecture/presentation and hands-on exercises. Throughout the day, we'll be brewing, drinking, and cupping coffee, so come ready to get caffeinated!
Several short breaks are scheduled throughout the day, and we'll have an hour for lunch (provided) around 12pm.
Professional-Level Coffee KnowledgeCoffee is big. It would be impossible to learn everything about this complex an diverse industry in one day. But each section of this course offers an in-depth primer in the knowledge needed to begin your journey as a coffee professional in any area of the industry.
By the end of this full-day course, students will have all the knowledge needed to begin pursuing a career as a barista, roaster, or other coffee professional.
Your InstructorBrian Webb, the lead instructor for all of our coffee workshops, initially developed this class for the SCA's Specialty Coffee Expo.
Brian has been teaching specialty coffee courses and training baristas for over a decade. From 2014 to 2019, he lived on the Big Island of Hawai'i, where he worked as a coffee roaster, educator, and processing consultant.
