EAST PATCHOGUE, NY — A person riding in the backseat of a Sport-utility vehicle was injured in a drive-by shooting in the East Patchogue/North Bellport area on Tuesday night then driven to a local hospital by a good Samaritan, Suffolk police said. The shooter, who was in a black sedan with dark, tinted windows that was driving next to the car, fired several shots, injuring the backseat passenger, at around 8:45 p.m., said police, adding that the car then left the scene. The man behind the wheel of the damaged SUV drove himself, the shooting victim and another male passenger to the parking lot of a gas station on Hospital Road in East Patchogue. From there, a good Samaritan offered to drive the gunshot victim to the hospital. The person, whose identity has not bee released, was "seriously but not critically injured," police said. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call 631-854-8542, or Crime Stoppers, a confidential police hotline, at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential, according to police.
